Probably the easiest of flies to identify since they have a metallic green, blue or yellow-brown body. These flies range in size from 7 - 13mm in length. The characteristics and arrangement of hairs are used to tell the difference between members of this family.
Adult cluster flies are approximately 8 to 10 mm long. They are dark grey with black and silver (non-metallic) checkered abdomens, with many golden hairs on their thorax (these may or may not be present on older flies). Their wings overlap when they are at rest. The name “cluster fly” is derived from their habit of gathering in clusters before and during hibernation.
Fruit flies are commonly encountered in association with fermenting waste material, especially fruit and vegetable matter. They are also common in areas where soft drinks, alcohol, beer, ice cream and fermenting flour are found. Garbage and recycling bins are ideal locations to breed. Newly developed adults are attracted to light.
Flies are a common pest in homes and commercial establishments. Flies normally are associated with decayed or spoiled debris. In this kind of habitat of both feeding and breeding, it is a certainty that flies and their maggots will come into contact with a wide variety of bacteria. Because they are associated with disease and because they can readily gain entry to buildings, flies pose significant pest problems.
